What remains is to shape the handle into something that feels good and looks good. You should be trying to produce a handle which in cros section should be in the shaoe of a inverted egg, and in plan tapers slightly from the end to the top of the walking sticks shank. For your first attempt on the walking sticks its better to taper ina form of a wedge. With more experience you ca develop more interesting elongated bell shape. It isn''t that much more difficult to make but it produces a lot better looking walking sticks.
When you believe you getting to the final stage of the walking sticks handle put down the rasp. The graze marks left by the rasps now have to be smoothed out and for this task you need some form of scraper. Work carefully in the direction of the grain of the walking sticks, and with minimum pressure drew the scraper over any rasp marks until they dissappear. The walking sticks handle now needs to be smoothed down with sand paper using fairly coarse grade to start with(P100) then medium(P180) and a finer grade (P280) to finish. You should continue sanding until all blemishes are removed and any grain configuration becomes clear.
The final smoothing process to your walking sticks is to remove any scratches left aby the sand paper using 0000 grade steel wool.
