Its inportant to choose the right walking sticks when harvesting, some walking sticks will have a nice handle but the shaft is to out shape and on the other hand you could have a perfectly straight shaft but a very small handle which wouldn't suit the walking sticks at all.
Blackthorn are the most tricky walking sticks to harvest, they grow in a way that the branches grow ontop of each other and almost get tangled in themselves, this makes trying to spot the right walking sticks very hard to do. Blackthorns also are full of thorns which makes the process even more awkward and when the are poisonous its important to watch what you are doing.
Unlike Blackthorns, Hazel walking sticks are much easyier to harvest, they mostly grow in small bunches and grow very straight but its also important to keep them trimed down and make it easy for the new shouts to come up for the next year. Depending on were you live hazels come in large quantities and are easy to get compared to blackthorn walking sticks.
When all the walking sticks are collected they are then stored for a year or two, this is done by tying the walking sticks in bundles of 5 or 6 and then tying them from a height so the bottom of the walking sticks are not hitting the ground, this is done to stop the walking sticks from bending and when they are hanging in mid air there is no pressure on them to bend.
